What is the difference between a standoff and a spacer?

Standoffs are threaded on both ends, whereas spacers are unthreaded & have an inside clearance hole.

Do you have to remove unused standoffs?

Any unused standoffs must be removed and every mounting hole in the motherboard must be screwed into a standoff to prevent short-circuiting of the motherboard.
