Hex bolts are bolts with external threading and a hex head. They are designed to be driven by a wrench. Hex bolts may be partly threaded or completely threaded, and are available in hex cap & hex tap variants. They are inserted into holes with machined & tapped threads, and are available in coarse thread (UNC) and fine thread (UNF) options.
The most fundamental distinction between a cap screw and a bolt is how these fasteners are installed. A bolt is installed by turning a nut to tighten the fastener, whereas a cap screw is assembled and tightened by turning the head of the bolt.
Double-ended bolts, also known as stud bolts, have a threaded portion on each end of the bolt rather than a traditional head. One end is threaded to fit into a suitable hole that has been tapped with a mated thread, while the other protrudes and is threaded to hold a nut.
Machine screws do not have a pointed edge and are designed to be used in holes that are already tapped or have a nut. They are threaded all the way through the shaft.
