These types of lug nuts have a six-sided head. The heads are threaded onto the wheel stud to keep the wheel fixed in position. Hex nuts are made of chrome-plated steel, but variants constructed with lighter materials like titanium and aluminium are also available.
Open-ended lug nuts have no closed ends and are threaded through the length of the nut. Owing to this design, the nut can be used on long wheel studs. Open-ended lug nuts are commonly used on race cars.
When changing tyres, lug nuts are easier to work with than lug bolts because the wheels can be hung on the stud and tightened without the need to align two sets of holes, as with lug bolts. However, avoid damaging the threads of a wheel stud because replacing one is tricky. On the other hand, if a car's bolt hole with lug bolts becomes damaged, you may need to replace the entire hub.
It is a common type of lug nut. This style is distinguished by its cone-shaped lug seat, which features a 60-degree taper that self-centres the lug onto the wheel when tightened.
