An object can be struck with a mallet without being harmed. Usually composed of solid wood, rubber or leather, they are lightweight. They work better when seating or nudging objects close to one another.
There are two types of rubber mallets: those with solid rubber heads connected to a handle and those with metal heads having rubber pads on their faces. These latter versions usually contain opposing rubber pads with two different densities and some even have replaceable pads.
The mallet is also used to strike objects, much like a hammer. Mallets are usually constructed of wood or rubber and have just one head. A mallet is used to strike anything more gently and avoid crushing or denting the surface. Unlike a metallic hammer, it is composed of softer material.
